Apple iOS 14.1 – Should you try this upgrade?

0

Apple has released its latest OS update for iPhones, iOS 14.1 on October 20, 2020. The new iOS 14.1 is available for iPhones 6s and newer. This iOS 14.1 comes less than a month from Apple’s big event and launch of iOS 14 on September 16, 2020. In between the two versions, there was a minor release of iOS 14.0.1 which carried some bug fixes on the base release, iOS 14.

What’s New in iOS 14.1?

The newer version of iOS brings in a handful of issue fixes to iPhone users which include the resized home page widgets, folders and icons. With other trivial fixes to the iOS 14, another striking fix is the incorrect alias name for the mails sent from Apple Mail app.

The single new feature for iPhone users is the additional support for 10-bit HDR videos. Though only the latest iPhone 12 models can actually record 10-bit HDR videos, the elder siblings of iPhone 12, i.e., iPhone 8 and newer devices can play and edit them in the Photos app.

What’s bad about iOS 14.1?

With the new fix to the mail alias name in iOS 14.1, the new update brings in a new variant of a bug along. The much-expected feature to select default browser and email has taken a hit with this update. Basically, whenever you update your preferred default browser or email app via Apple App Store, the default selection for the browser or email is reset to Safari and Apple Mail. Though Apple doesn’t have a workaround for this yet, it is expected that Apple will be rolling out a new minor release for this issue.

What’s unanswered from iOS 14?

Just days after the much-expected iOS 14 roll-out, many Apple iPhone users felt their iPhones to consume more battery than it usually does. The comparisons of a iOS 14 beta user claimed that the battery consumption was evidently more post the upgrade. The user pointed out to his iPhone having 47% remaining after a day’s use wherein ideally the usage will leave him 80% remaining. Though Apple has not completely agreed to such numerical figures, the Cupertino tech giant advised users to unpair the Apple Watch after backing-up the data, erase all the content on iPhone and restart using it. There hasn’t been a proper fix to this battery issue yet.

Should you upgrade iOS 14.1?

With two days into the new iOS 14.1, though there are quite a few fixes to minor issues, there isn’t any striking feature update. Also, considering the newly introduced bugs and inconsistencies, “Techmye” advises you to skip this upgrade. However, users with Safari and Apple Mail as their default browsers and email app can try this new OS update from Apple.
